When you go cold turkey on any normal weight loss plan, you probably find at some point within a few days that you start feeling stressed out, burned out, like you just can't go on doing the new program. Within a few days the self-doubt and cravings kick in.
Why? Because what happens when we try to change everything about our diet and lifestyle over the course of a day or so on a typical weight loss program is this: our hard-wired, completely normal internal panic response kicks in.
Yes, the brain's natural response to panic is to self-protect -- pull back, drop out, get back to basics to avoid overwhelming your brain with only new stimuli, get back to emotional eating if that's a challenge you have had in the past. Our brains literally CRAVE routine, you see.
But if you get to the point where the panic response kicks in, if you're like most people, you WILL drop out. In which case you're still unhappy about your weight and once again have to work up the mental energy even to consider trying again, but you’re actually worse off than when you started because your confidence has taken a big blow so it gets that much harder to start once again. When we start out trying to lose weight, most of us -- myself included -- initially and incorrectly focus almost exclusively on what to eat and how to work out, but it's actually the MENTAL/EMOTIONAL side of the weight loss process that's what trips most of us up. The simple truth is that your mind is the most powerful weight loss tool you have -- and many moms commit weight loss SELF-SABOTAGE every time they try to lose weight without even knowing it.

It came down to a promise. I'd told myself that no matter what, I would solve my weight problem for life by the time I turned 30.

And yet on my 30th birthday, there I was, still overweight. The number on the scale jolted me into reality because for the first time ever, I weighed in at more than my husband, and he's nearly a foot taller than me!
